NEW ORLEANS-BASED SONGSTRESS MISS SOPHIE LEE TO RELEASE TRAVERSE THIS UNIVERSE ON JULY 22, 2016

ATHENS, GA—New Orleans-based singer/songwriter Miss Sophie Lee will release her fourth full-length recording, Traverse This Universe, on July 22nd on her own KingMoon Recordings.   This is the follow-up to her 2013 release, Love Street Lullaby.  After relocating to NOLA from Chicago in 2001, she released a self-titled debut in 2006. In 2009 she released Tallulah Moon, which All About Jazz called a “…throwback to simpler days, when a song took its own sweet time to develop and tell the story.”  In 2012, she was featured in a popular commercial for Audi performing her rendition of “Careless Love” earning her new fans from around the world.

For this recording, Miss Sophie Lee teamed with heralded songwriter Luke Winslow-King (Bloodshot Records), who not only helmed the production but also co-wrote two of the eleven tracks on the CD.  Traverse this Universe features six original compositions, several co-written with Earl J. Scioneaux III, and five standards included in Miss Lee’s live repertoire.  She enlisted over two dozen NOLA-based musicians, many of them who back her at her weekly residency at The Spotted Cat.  In addition to Winslow-King on guitar and Scioneaux on piano/organ, the players include Matt Bell (guitar), Dave Boswell (trumpet), Aurora Nealand (clarinet), Tommy Sciple (bass), Matt Rhody (Violin), Khris Royal (Sax) and many more.  It was recorded/mixed/mastered by the Grammy-nominated Misha Kachkachishvili at the renowned Esplanade Studios in New Orleans.

While the recording is traditional in its jazz roots, the import of reggae, salsa, Dixieland, swing and even electric guitars makes this recording sound completely fresh in 2016.  Vocally, Miss Lee echoes the sentiment of Billie Holiday meets Sade in an almost an ethereal way, but rest assured her voice is uniquely her own.  A proud mother first and foremost, the album artwork highlights the creative talents of her eight and six year old daughters for the cover and packaging.

In addition to being a musician and mother, Miss Lee is also a respected restaurateur in New Orleans as part-owner of the hip music venue, Three Muses.   She is currently working on opening two more restaurants, including a sister location to Three Muses and Seoul Shack, which will feature Korean/Soul food fusion cuisine, a culmination of her mixed race heritage, and live music.   She has also made appearances in “The Big Short,” “Top Chef” and “On The Road with G. Garvin.”

Miss Lee will celebrate the release of Traverse This Universe with a CD release show at The Spotted Cat in New Orleans on Thursday, July 21st.  More details will be announced closer to show date.  Currently, Miss Lee and her band can be seen live every Thursday at The Spotted Cat located at 623 Frenchman Street, New Orleans.
